As an African American with a deep passion for music, my musical journey has been a diverse and evolving one. Growing up in the early 80s and 90s, my music collection was primarily filled with R&B, Hip-Hop, and House music from local city DJs. During that time, I felt that these genres were at the peak of their greatness, but something changed around the turn of the millennium (2000 C.E.).
Around this time, it became apparent to me that the creative thought process within these genres had taken a nosedive, and in my humble opinion, it has only continued to decline over the past 23 years. This realization prompted me to embark on a quest to find music that was characterized by genuine thought and planning.
Fortunately, in 2003, during my time in a fraternity, a frat brother and long-time friend introduced me to the world of Symphonic Metal, particularly the band TOOL and other great progressive metal artists. Listening to this music for the first time opened creative portals within myself that not only inspired my art but also influenced my writing.
Now, when I look at the current state of Hip-Hop and R&B, I can confidently say that my decision to continue listening to Symphonic Metal has been the most rewarding musical experience of my life. Some may wonder how I can make such a comparison, so let me explain why Symphonic Metal has captured my heart.
The Use of Instruments Over Artificial Beats and Snares: Symphonic metal bands predominantly use real instruments that they have dedicated years to mastering. In contrast, many Hip-Hop and R&B artists rely on computer software and preloaded instrument files. Learning and playing real instruments involve a depth of emotion and passion that can be felt in the music, which artificial beats and snares often lack.
Natural Vocals vs. Cyber-Enhanced Vocals: While I don't intend to demean the singing abilities of Rap/R&B artists, it's evident that many rely on lip-syncing, auto-tune, or other software to enhance their vocal performance. In contrast, lead singers in symphonic metal bands typically have formal opera vocal training. Bands like Epica, Kamelot, and Mushroomhead incorporate opera and theatrical elements into their music, resulting in a more authentic and powerful vocal experience.
Ballads of Poetic Nature vs. Cookie-Cutter Lyrics: Symphonic metal often features lyrics crafted in a storytelling structure, creating a narrative with a clear rise, climax, and resolution. These dynamics, or variations in loudness between notes and phrases, add depth to the music. In contrast, many Rap/Hip-Hop lyrics tend to be repetitive and filled with clichéd buzzwords and phrases.
Music Videos of Artistic Imagery vs. Commercial Illusions of Grandeur: Symphonic metal music videos are known for their artistic quality, with careful attention to set design, costumes, and cinematography. These videos often tell a visual story that complements the music. In contrast, many Rap/Hip-Hop videos can be characterized by a focus on materialism, luxury cars, extravagant jewelry, and, at times, lackluster cinematography.
In conclusion, my preference for Symphonic Metal over current Hip-Hop and R&B genres is not a rejection of my cultural roots but a reflection of my appreciation for music that demonstrates true artistry, creativity, and passion. Symphonic Metal has provided me with a musical journey filled with depth and imagination, and it continues to inspire my artistic endeavors.
