TIPS FOR NOVICE WRITERS

Updated: Jul 18, 2023

  1. Keep a daily journal - Helps with improving writing and cognitive skills. I find it therapeutic for reducing stress. In addition, it is a great way to track personal growth.

  2. Selecting a genre and story idea - Start with a genre and ideas that interest you. Putting in time in a project that does not have your heart can lead to a horrible story.

  3. Write what you know - It is best to write based on your experience. That can come through daily life, personal research, or personal experience.

  4. Create a plot structure - Plot structure builds the backbone of your story. It would help keep track of the story arc.

  5. Create a character arc - This shows the development of your character/s of your story. It is essential to demonstrate the growth or the downfall of your protagonist/Antagonist. This technique helps your audience relate to the characters of your narrative.

  6. Choose a target number of chapters. Determine a specific number of chapters to write. Start small with at least ten chapters. It is okay to go below or above targeted chapters.

  7. Create an Outline - This is an excellent way to create a title of your chapter and descriptive text of what will transpire in each chapter.

  8. Write at least 1000 words per chapter a day - (In two months, that is ideally 60,000 words. Some may do more. Depending on the time and length.

  9. Edit your story: Try editing your chapter after you finish it. Editing a completed chapter prevents you from getting overwhelmed by editing a complete manuscript.

  10. Use editing and audio software - There are software and online service that will aid you in catching mistakes you are likely to miss. I have found software that is perfect to use.

    1. Grammarly & Word - Edit at least four of your drafts. I go back and forth between the two software. They conflict with each other on the usage of words or phrases. At that point, you would have to make a judgment call. Hey, it beats missing mistakes.

    2. Convert text to audio.

      1. I used Natural Reader as my first text to audio software. Starting price $9.99 a month. Price may vary depending on price inflation.

      2. Blastersuite Online offers a one-lifetime fee of $69.00. After that, you have unlimited access.

  11. Abandon your book - I know this sounds ridiculous, but I am not considering abandoning your project forever. For at least a week, take a break from writing once you complete the first draft. Looking over your book with fresh eyes can help you find mistakes after editing the text.

  12. Research - what story do you want to write to keep up with current events Regardless, you may know the information. You still want to research. Information constantly changes every two years.

  13. Stay healthy - Staying healthy is also very important. Keeping the body healthy aids in the creative process of keeping you fresh with ideas. Here are a few suggestion to help you stay in shape.

  14. Get exercise - It helps serotonin, dopamine, and blood flow, perfect for writers.

    • Eat healthily - This promotes good brain health. There is a list of foods that can help. I found most of the food at Heathline.com. My nutrition advice is to eat a well-balanced meal of vegetables, meat, grain, dairy, and fruit.

    • Get sufficient sleep - Getting proper rest is very important. Getting at least 6 to 8 hours of sleep regenerates brain cells and reduces stress, high blood pressure, and other health problems.

    • Reduce stress - Stress is an enemy of the brain, as mentioned in health problems. Stress causes writer's block and can kill the creative vibe.
