Hello, fellow creators and dreamers!
Today, I want to share a personal journey with you. It’s a story of passion, regret, and ultimately, redemption. Twenty years ago, I used to draw and paint. I loved it. But life took me on a different path, one that led me to writing. While I have no regrets about the stories I've crafted, I've always felt a pang of loss for the visual art I left behind. Looking back, I realize it was a big mistake to abandon my journey to becoming a visual artist in comic art.
The Awakening
Living in the present day, storytelling and manga art have surged in popularity. Everywhere I look, I see incredible artwork paired with gripping narratives, and I can't help but feel that I missed out on something special. That regret has been a constant companion, a quiet whisper urging me to pick up my pencils and brushes again. So, I decided to go full force into becoming a better manga artist. It may take a year to get my skill to even subpar, but I’m committed to teaching myself and reigniting my artistic flame.
Steps to Becoming a Manga Artist
If you’re like me and want to become a manga artist, here are the steps I'm taking on this journey. I hope they can guide you too.
1. Research Manga and Anime
Dive deep into the world of manga and anime. Buy it, watch it, and most importantly, study it. Analyze the styles, the storytelling techniques, and the way artists convey emotions and action. Invest in "how-to" books dedicated to teaching manga drawing techniques. These resources are invaluable for understanding the fundamentals and advanced skills needed for manga art.
2. Online Courses and YouTube Tutorials
The internet is a treasure trove of knowledge. I found an incredible YouTube channel called "Learn How To Manga" that has improved my skills greatly in just under a month. Online courses and tutorials can provide structured learning and practical tips that are easy to follow and apply.
3. Practice Every Day
Consistency is key. Dedicate time every day to practice your drawing. Whether it’s sketching basic shapes, practicing anatomy, or creating full scenes, daily practice will steadily improve your skills and build your confidence.
4. Buy the Right Tools
Equip yourself with the tools of the trade. Manga artists often use specific brushes, nib pens, and other materials to create their work. Investing in good quality tools can make a significant difference in the quality of your art.
5. Go Digital
If you prefer digital art, make sure to get programs that are tailored for cartoon and animation. Examples include Clip Studio Paint, Adobe Animate, and Procreate. These programs offer a wide range of features that are perfect for creating manga and comic art.
6. Learn Perspective Drawing
Perspective drawing is crucial in manga art. It helps create depth and realism in your scenes. Invest time in learning and practicing perspective drawing to make your artwork more dynamic and engaging.
Conclusion
Starting this journey again has been both challenging and rewarding. Every sketch, every line drawn brings me closer to my goal. It’s never too late to pursue a passion, and I hope my story inspires you to chase after your dreams, no matter how long it’s been.
